The National Cyber Security Report, published 4 November 2024, is a timely reminder of the importance of cybersecurity in safeguarding our businesses and our future.  The report, produced by the Department of the Environment, Climate, and Communication, reviews the current National Cyber Security Strategy, now at the mid-way point. 

Key Highlights from the Report
Evolving threat landscape
Of the 5,275 reports made to the National Cyber Security Centre in 2023, the most commonly observed cyber incidents were those carried out by criminal groups seeking financial gain. The main attack vectors used by these groups were phishing attacks and malware (usually distributed via email). The worsening global security situation is reflected in increased state-sponsored cyber activity. 

Government commitment
The Irish Government is committed to strengthening the nation’s cybersecurity posture. The National Cyber Security Centre is expanding its resources and capabilities to better support businesses in their fight against cybercrime.    

Skills gap
There is a growing demand for cybersecurity professionals in Ireland. Businesses need to invest in training and development to ensure they have the skills to protect themselves or reach out to trusted partners who can support them.  

Collaboration is key
The report emphasises the importance of collaboration between businesses, government agencies, and other stakeholders in the fight against cybercrime.

Prioritise cybersecurity
Make cybersecurity a top priority. Invest in robust security measures and ensure your employees are trained on cybersecurity best practices.    

Stay Informed
Keep up-to-date on the latest cybersecurity threats and vulnerabilities. The NCSC website is a valuable resource for information and guidance.    

Report cybercrime
If you are a victim of a cyber-attack, report it to the Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau (GNCCB). They can help you investigate the attack and take steps to prevent future attacks. It is typically estimated that less than 25% of companies inform Gardaí of an attack on their systems. Reporting facilitates expert investigation , victim support and the identification of current trends and there  

Don’t pay ransoms
If you are targeted by ransomware, do not pay the ransom. The experience of GNCCB and its partners is that payment is no guarantee that data will be released. There are also many instances of criminals repeating attacks or demands once they realised the company was willing to pay. While is may be tempting to pay, instead, report the attack to the authorities and work with them to restore your data from backups.    

Embrace a culture of cybersecurity
Create a culture of cybersecurity within your organisation. Encourage employees to report suspicious emails and other potential threats.
