Shannondoc and Viatel Technology Group: A Partnership for Reliable Medical Services

Shannondoc was founded in 2002 and provides out-of-hours medical services in Ireland’s Mid-West region, ensuring continuous support. The team includes 120 doctors, 30 nurses, and 50 support staff, operating from a Central Call Centre at St. Camillus’ Hospital in Limerick City and 12 Treatment Centres. Handling over 110,000 cases annually, the Call Centre processes all medical cases, with reports sent to family GPs for follow-up care.  The staff are dedicated to delivering a modern, world-class medical service.

The Business Requirement

IT infrastructure is vital to their operations, and when Mike Finucane took over as General Manager in 2012, the existing IT infrastructure, datacentre, and PCs required a complete overhaul.

 The first step was to assess the current state and identify needs. Viatel Technology Group was asked to assist with this process. The Viatel team visited all Shannondoc sites to thoroughly understand the work they carry out as an organisation, and presented a clear plan for moving forward. They also helped present the business case for investment to the board and provided a cost-effective solution, which was a key requirement for the project.

Viatel Technology Group planned, specified, built, and implemented an entirely new network and datacentre for us, as well as rolling out new PCs to all users. Today, Viatel Technology Group continue to capably support us.

Viatel Technology Group coordinated with Valentia, the new call centre software providers, and Vodafone for connectivity. On 10 June 2014, Shannondoc went live in one of their 11 locations, followed by the Limerick locations and the rest over the next few weeks. The biggest switch was the datacentre. At 5 am on 31 August, the old system was switched off, and the Viatel Technology Group team had until 5 pm to have the new system up and running. By 4:30 pm, the new system was operational, and over the next few days, any issues were promptly addressed.

Today, Viatel Technology Group continues to support Shannondoc capably. The team are trusted to provide solutions that optimise processes for the Shannondoc team, often suggesting ways to make cost-savings, such as cleaning up software licensing and making the best use of non-profit status.
